Minor documentation issues in 5.1.1

#1 Post by MrBrian » Thu Aug 25, 2011 11:00 pm

Here are a few documentation issues in UBCD 5.1.1:

1. Program menu and UBCD website state that GParted 0.8.1 is included. However, the included version is actually 0.9.0.

2. The list of programs at the UBCD website doesn't include PCloginnow, PCregedit, PCcmoscleaner and PCdiskeraser, which are available in Parted Magic.

3. Some well-known programs available in Parted Magic such as Clonezilla and Firefox could perhaps be included in the main list of programs at the UBCD website, just as TestDisk and PhotoRec are now.

4. In the first screen that appears when pressing F1 when item "Parted Magic" is highlighted, the word "avaible" should be spelled "available".

P.S. Thank you to all of you that have worked on UBCD!

Just a comment about adding those programs to the list of tools included in UBCD.

The extra modules in PartedMagic are added when building UBCD, so Victor can be sure about them being included.

The other tools of PartedMagic are not exactly "under Victor's control". For some time, Clonezilla was not included in PartedMagic. FF was also not always included (besides the fact that FF, although useful, is not a tool related to the main target of UBCD).

Even browsing the official site of PartedMagic, the programs are not listed with their version, and most tools are not even listed. There are tools listed in PartedMagic's website but they are not always included in the releases.

In addition, there are tools in NwDsk which are not listed in UBCD, but they are included in the release.

So, adding the tools of PartedMagic in the list of UBCD might turn to be more messy and confusing (for the final user) than it first seems to be.

I found another issue in the CPUStress initrd image in UBCD 5.1.1.

The version of Mersenne Prime Test 23 in scripts and helps texts all say it's v23.5.2, but the actual version included is v23.9.2.

(This seems to be a regression because the initrd image from this thread viewtopic.php?p=6643#6643 says the correct version.)

In the "Parted Magic" section it states "Full list of programs can be found here (link)". Of course that's the newest version of Parted Magic. Works for me as it is.

Another documentation issue in the CPUstress image.

In the file /opt/stress/stress.txt of the image, this note appears two times:

Code: Select all

NOTE: Don't use the following options!
This cpustress image doesn't support writing to a disk.
If you want to to stress the hard disk also, boot into windows and
download Stress v1.01 or use a real linux distribution (e.g. Parted
Magic) and run it from there.
But the problem is that there is no Windows version of stress. The stress website states that it's for POSIX systems.

(Please don't confuse 'stress' with CPU Burn-in, which indeed has a Windows version.)

The version number of "PC INSPECTOR clone-maxx" is actually 0.95 build 769 , not 1.0.

Known issue. "PC INSPECTOR" released that version as "1.0", but without updating the internal data. For years it has been known as "1.0".

But the UBCD website and menus does not document this.
For example in the homepage, it should have a note like this:
Actual version is 0.95 Build 769, but is referred to as 1.0 on product website.
like it does to PC INSPECTOR e-maxx.
(Actual version is 0.95 Build 775, but is referred to as 1.0 on product website.)
