Fixing Windows XP SP2

My dvd drive wasn't working so well, so I started it up under 'last known good configurations' and it wouldn't start up windows, period.
I got my copy of this on ebay, didn't know that it was a 'bootleg', sorry about that.
But it did say it could restore windows.. and I have no idea how to do it. I tried the option to recover window X, but it just gets to a screen that says something about needing to lower my screen resolution, and I don't know how to do that outside of windows. >_>
Any help for a clueless noob?
