Smart Boot Manager Killed my OS Startup

I looked at all 3 boot managers and the other 2 looked like greek so I tried that first. I thought I knew what I was doing as I made 2 hard drives active. One had win98SE and the other had win2000.
Well, I hit "install" on that crazy Tab menu thing and nothing happened. THere was no indication that it installed anything. Until I booted from my F8 menu and chose the win98se drive and got a black screen that said "could not startup" I went back in and did the uninstall and nothing happened. So now after 3 days of repartitioning, reformatting, and re-installing, I have to spend a 4th day of re-installing win98se it looks like. The boot manager is not smart. Its viscious. not cool.
