cannot delete file in dos?!

#1 Post by hibijibis » Sat Apr 14, 2007 6:59 am

Hi there,

I am at my wits end. I reinstalled my computer recently and after running windows update, i have noticed some random folders containing updspapi.dll and update.exe in them. which are UNDELETABLE (well... by me anyway.) these folders are located on my usb external hard disk. so worse came to worse and i thought i would try and delete them through DOS.

The USB HDD is NTFS. And i was able to access it in freedos. i got to the folder and tried to delete the file and it said access denied. i then tried this command:

attrib -r -a -s -h [filename]

and it still says access denied.

Can someone please help me! I thought i would be able to delete any file from dos. but this is way above my lvl of knowledge. Thank you

NTFS support on the DOS disks is *read-only*.

Try the NTFS4DOS boot disk on UBCD, or try Puppy Linux, as I suggested earlier in another thread.

thank you for your quick reply! no wonder it wasnt able to o anything..

well i tried to use NTFS4DOS as suggested. i loaded it from the file system tools and it came up with weird msgs saying UMB unavailable and hard disk not found non-ATA or something. Then it went to a screen with just ".." and then stopped.

I'm guessing it should go to a prompt. But it just hangs.

Strange ^^
Well, if your Windows system still runs fine, you may try to delete those files using Unlocker.
Hammerite Compendium of Precepts, Regimens and Rules of Conduct, Vol. 113 :

yes. i was nvr able to find much information about the "UMB unavailable" error in ntfs4dos.

Yes i also did try unlocker. That couldn't delete it either. Haha.

In the end, I backed up the important stuffed just formatted it. Took ages tho. But it did the trick.
