Is there a secret backdoor lockout weapon in WinXP ??

I ask this because things are very strange. very, very strange indeed...

My company laptop has CyberSentinel3.0 software that is annoying the crap out of me because I take that laptop home and even when I am using my own DSL connection it blocks pages like download.com and gmail.com, etc saying it is 'illegal website access'...

The actual files themselves are located in C:\program files\security software systems\cybersentinel3.0

I don't have local admin access (it running xp pro sp2) so I can't uninstall the program, BUT I also cannot delete the folder or even add/remove/rename/create new files in the entire "cybersentinel3.0" folder directory?

I have used slax and ntfs4dos and both lets me view every other part of my laptop including system32 folder, all my documents, all windows folders, etc, but slax cannot view the cybersentinel3.0 folder at all! It gives an error message saying the folder is not valid or does not exists!

So today I thought for sure ntfs4dos will be able to get rid of it... guess what... when I tried to access the "cybersentinel3.0" folder it said :


''CHDIR not valid " or something like that, basically it cannot change directory/access/view the folder at all! The folder is NOT encrypted, in fact its in PLAIN view in XP except I cannot delete and also cannot even ADD any files (even test.txt notepad files, etc) into the folder. I thought at first XP had locked it, but booting in ntfs4dos should have given my access right??

Is there a secret powerful way to make a folder/directory in NTFS file format so sequre and so locked-down that even ntfs editors or linux live-cd bootables cannot access/view/change/edit them????

This is so mysterious that its beyond me trying to get rid of the program anymore, to the point where I have never even HEARD of something like this being even remotely possible and this is just freaking/weirding me out...

has any of you ever heard of this? what is the problem? is there any logical explaination for this or is there a secure way to ultrasecure folders from access in ntfs/xp that most people don't hear about?

try logging into the computer as "administrator" or "admin" and leave the password field blank , see if you can get into it then...

or you could try: start>run>msconfig>startup tab> un-check any thing that say's "cybersentinel"

then reboot and say "ok" to the error message " don't show again"

Just because you can see the folder and it looks just like a regular folder in XP does not mean that it is. If Slax and NTFS4DOS can't see the folder, that is your best clue that it is hidden or encrypted somehow. I would guess that Cyber Sentinel has a plugin running in Windows explorer that makes the file visible in Win.

Well anyway if I were you I wouldn't uninstall anything put on my company laptop by their computer service ... if that really annoys you, you still may boot on some LiveCD instead of the system that crappy program is installed in.

Have a look at NTPasswd or BartPE (free) / ERD Commander 2005 (commercial) to name just a few...
