UBCD vs UBCD4Win

#1 Post by sonxUbCd » Tue Sep 18, 2007 6:22 am

http://www.ubcd4win.com/

I noticed these are two different programs, any significance in their differences? Is UBCDWin dedicated for windows as it suggest, and UBCD for all platforms

UBCD boots mostly DOS floppy images using a virtual floppy disk facility provided by isolinux/memdisk. It also loads certain Linux diagnostic apps via the isolinux loader.

UBCD for Windows uses BartPE to create a bootable CD from your existing Windows installation. This allows you to boot up Windows from the CD directly that is capable of running certain Windows apps that you can use to diagnose or fix your system.

@Victor... what do you mean by DOS floppy images and how does this help one to diagnose faulty windows?

Certain apps: Any specific ones which would not run under UBCDWin? I also had problems detecting my USB Flash....

A DOS floppy image is an image file obtained from an actual bootable floppy disk. When you insert such a floppy disk into a computer that contains a physical floppy disk drive and power on, it will boot and launch the DOS program contained on the floppy disk eg. IBM/Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test. It may not necessary help you diagnose faulty windows. For example, Drive Fitness Test helps diagnose IBM/Hitachi's hard drives. Other disks might help you diagnose memory problems, hardware problems etc. Check out the homepage for the individual apps listed on the home page for more information on what each of them does.
