UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME ...STOP Message

#1 Post by Bacona42 » Fri Aug 03, 2007 2:41 pm

I have a Sony Vaio which starts up then it goes to a blue screen. The blue screen of Death is what others refer it to. I want to use your CD to run chkdsk or repair my Windows XP. I ordered a recovery disk from Sony, but that only deletes my whole C drive. I do not own an XP disk. From the menus on the CD, how can i fix my boot up problem with my Operating System. Any help would be great...i really want to get back onto my computer to save some files off it. :( Desperate, and do not want to give Geek Squad $250. thanks

I am unfamiliar with NTFS4DOS's chkdsk, specifically if it has the /r switch available.

You can download Recovery.iso (which is a CD-bootable version of the XP boot floppies, not the whole OS) and run chkdsk /r from that, or alternatively get any bootable copy of Windows 2000 or XP and run the recovery console off that.
