UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME ...STOP Message
I have a Sony Vaio which starts up then it goes to a blue screen. The blue screen of Death is what others refer it to. I want to use your CD to run chkdsk or repair my Windows XP. I ordered a recovery disk from Sony, but that only deletes my whole C drive. I do not own an XP disk. From the menus on the CD, how can i fix my boot up problem with my Operating System. Any help would be great...i really want to get back onto my computer to save some files off it.
Desperate, and do not want to give Geek Squad $250. thanks

I am unfamiliar with NTFS4DOS's chkdsk, specifically if it has the /r switch available.
You can download Recovery.iso (which is a CD-bootable version of the XP boot floppies, not the whole OS) and run chkdsk /r from that, or alternatively get any bootable copy of Windows 2000 or XP and run the recovery console off that.
